We’ve had a tough time the past few weeks. Although we were very excited to go to Buenos Aires, it just didn’t suit us. The invasion of mossies, the dog poo on the streets where we lived (Las Canitas) and the fact that we found the Spanish there really hard to understand - all combined to make us miserable.

Buenos Aires: As a LIP Location

So how does Buenos Aires measure up as a destination for Location Independent Professionals?
I’m not quite sure why we decided to go to Buenos Aires - it’s a fair way down South, quite a flight from Panama (and expensive too) but I’d always wanted to go so we decided that we’d try it.

I’m not quite sure why we decided to go to Buenos Aires - it’s a fair way down South, quite a flight from Panama (and expensive too) but I’d always wanted to go so we decided that we’d try it.

Based on our original list of criteria below, here is how it measured up…

) Had a lower cost of living
2) Is English-speaking, or at least we could get by in English
3) Is a bit more ‘exotic’ and different from the usual expat places
4) Has good internet & telecoms structure
5) Is politically stable & safe
6) Has a decent infrastructure that wouldn’t require us to ‘rough it’

Furnished Apartment: Buenos Aires

Buenosaires_apartments_181_1The furnished apartment we rented from Buenos Aires Habitat was a 1 bed-room apartment in Las Canitas - a part of town in Palermo.

The apartment was fine and not the reason we left BA early specifically, although in all honesty, it wasn’t the ideal place for us. It’s a very new apartment and we were the 2nd tenants ever apparently. This is evident in some of the finer details (such as the plastic-handled cutlery) and the lack of hooks for towels in the bathroom.

Pablo, from Buenos Aires Habitat, is aware of this however and they’re advising the landlords how to improve the overall facilities for future tenants.

5 Things We Hate About Buenos Aires

1. The dog poo - one of the worst days
yesterday where we literally had to hopskotch a pavement in between the
steaming piles. My legs went wobbly, I vowed I was never going to come
out again and I generally felt sick.

yesterday where we literally had to hopskotch a pavement in between the
steaming piles. My legs went wobbly, I vowed I was never going to come
out again and I generally felt sick.

2. The dog poo - I don’t understand why other people are content to
walk in it, smear it around the rest of the pavement and not want to do
something about it.

3. The dog poo - why can’t people just pick up after their dogs. Our
area seems to be the worst area. It’s probably because it’s residential
and less touristy. Surely the locals can’t like walking around &
living in pooville (we’ve renamed where we live).

4. The dog poo - I can’t bear wiping my feet on mats or anything in
shops now, who knows what else other people have wiped on there. I
think I can feel a phobia coming on….nlp skills at the ready.

5. The mosquitos (although hopefully they are on their way out now)
