The Complete List of Location Independent Professionals
…aka LIPs, Working Nomads, Vagabonds, NuNomads and any other name people fancy calling themselves!
In my travels around the blogosphere I am always on the lookout for others who do what we do - work and travel permanently. I’ve been slowly collecting links to these people and along with the help of my fab new VA (more about her in a later post), have built up a pretty good collection.
Note: I appreciate that there are plenty more people who are location independent, financially independent or traveling the world but in the interests of my time (it has already taken me half a day to write this post!) and to use some criteria to narrow down the category, I have focused on people who earn a living (or are trying to) by doing something they can do from anywhere they choose (i.e. location independent) and who do actually travel or plan to re-locate because of this.
So in alphabetical order, here is the list of LIPs I’ve found so far…
People who lead or are aspiring to lead the LIP lifestyle:
- Blog to Travel - by Dave, “earn web income on the road”.
- Coach Kip - an aspiring LIP and one of our regular commenters on this blog!
- Digital Nomad- says the author, “My personal paradigm shift: Embark on the journey of making a living online with a portable business, having the ability to travel and work from essentially anywhere on the planet.”
- Escape England - by Tina,
aiming towho “escaped England” in early 2008 and is currently in Thailand. - Fabulously Broke In The City - a “modern nomad” with a twist. The author has a corporate job but has no home base/own apartment to fo back to and instead lives “on location”.
- By Irina - by Irina Patterson a balloon entertainment artist who goes where the work is.
- Ironwulf - by Ferdinand L. Decena, “a globe trekker. A writer, travel and lifestyle photographer. A mountain climber with an injured knee. A frustrated musician. A silent poet. A Dishwalla fan. Ninja by day, shinigami by night. A Creative Theorist. A person living each day as an adventure.”
- Laptop Travel Lifestyle - by Cole Wiebe, a laptop traveler.
- Leave America - by Nia, an American earning an online income to leave America.
- Leave The Office - by Rob Cooke, “Initially born out of my desire to live a life without a “regular” job…I am trying to make the internet work for me and I am still learning, but I am more determined than ever to create this portable source of income.”
- Midlife Travel - a 40-something Kiwi looking to make a living online and travel the world.
- Modern Nomads by Jaap van Ekris, Bart Martens and Ronald van Vugt, “good friends and highly mobile ICT consultants”.
- Nerdy Nomad - by Kirsty, who is travelling in 2008 and will be living off earnings from the web.
- Nomad4Ever by Christian Skoda, “a Freethinker of German Origin and have a ‘Rat Race History’ of 14 years with a big European ITC firm up to VP and Director level before finally calling the quits. My choice is now a Nomadic Lifestyle…”
- Nomadesigner - by Greg Moulinet & Yoko Chiba, a husband-and-wife team running a graphic design business.
- Nomad Chronicles by Amy who has been a nomad since 2005 and runs a nomadic editorial business.
- NuNomads - by Carmen Bolanos and Richard Hamel, an online resource by two nomads who’ve teamed up together to run NuNomads.
- Project Nomad - “One Man’s Attempt at Lifestyle Design and the Quest for the Perfect Virtual Company”
- Retire Young & Wealth - by Mike, “an Australian, currently traveling around South East Asia…creating internet sites about traveling”.
- Self Made Minds - by Al Carlton & Scott Jones, I’m not sure if Al & Scott are strictly “LIPs”, but they do travel a lot and run location independent businesses.
- Tat Tso - by Tat Tso, a nomadic freelance web designer.
- Tech-nomads - by Tim Conley & Kane Gilmour who help others conquer the T.I.M challenge.
- The Great Journey - by Dennis Katzer, “A journey of 30 years - the longest expedition ever documented in human history - that’s our aim. Since 1991 we have now been on the road, as adventurers, film producers, photographers, authors, but mainly just as human beings, following the trail of our life project “The Great Journey”.
- The Hobo Soul - by Vern & Jeff, aspiring filmmakers living and working as “modern hobos” from a trailer.
- Ty & Mari Smith - travelling round the US & Canada in their motorhome whilst running their business.
- Vagabonding Begins! - by Greg Rodgers, recently learned Kung Fu in China.
- Working Nomad - by Anthony Page, one of the original Nomads who is apparently now temporarily ’settle’ in New Zealand.
And this list wouldn’t be complete without the following resources, beloved of LIPs, aspiring LIPs and world travelers alike:
- Brave New Traveler by Ian McKenzie, an online travel magazine “Exploring the inner journey through the outer world”.
- Vagabondish by Mike, “The Travelzine for Today’s Vagabond”.
- Vagablogging by Rolf Potts, where I’m also a guest writer so it must be good!
If I have missed any, I apologise, and please do let me know…this is a “list in progress” and I’ll aim to update it as I/you/we discover more.

Great - there goes my weekend! I’ve never heard of half of these. Obviously I have some catching up to do.
(Thanks for the mention, btw, Lea.)
I agree, this list is pretty extensive…my blogroll is going to be huge.
Thank you also for the mention, Lea.
Congratulations on the release of your paperback!
Hi Lea,
How come I didn’t get a mention?
Gavin
p.s . I like the blog theme, where have the advertising banners gone, is that just temporary?
Wahey! Thanks for the mention Lea, I’m delighted. Partly because it makes my move to the Caribbean all the more real when other people talk about it.
We’re off to do our reccy in one months time and you wouldn’t believe how excited we are. Three weeks of bliss. Back to the UK for two months. Then back to the Caribbean for much, much more in the way of blissfulness!
I’ll look forward to checking out those other guys and gals.
New site looks cool BTW.
Hi Lea
Great - thanks for the mention! I’ll have to update my blog roll too!!!!
@Mike, @ZEN - No problem guys. Happy reading!
@Gavin Allison - As I qualified in the intro to the post, I’ve tried mostly to include LIPs who do already or at least plan to travel/re-locate enabled by their LI status. I believe from an earlier comment you left, that you don’t currently do this at the moment due to your home commitments. If this changes, then I’ll happily add you to the list. By virtue of leaving your comment - you’re pretty much on it now anyway
The banners have gone because I don’t want to monetise the blog in this way - I don’t believe it makes for the best user experience for visitors and I believe they’re distracting. I’d rather readers focus on the content - and only then, if they find it valuable and useful, consider buying the book/subscribing to the Quarterly or anything else we offer here.
@Sarah - I agree, being Location Independent isn’t just about the freedom to work from anywhere, it’s about freedom in general - a very nice position to be in for sure!
@Leigh Hunt - So you mean doing a reccie soon and planning to move in 3/4 months time doesn’t make it real enough?!?
Wow thanks for the mention. I am very happy to be included on the list.
We are looking at boats right now and are getting our budget together. It is surprising how little money it takes to live independently. It is also surprising how unimportant things like TV become.
We have just one problem. Every time we think that we have found the boat that we want, we find another boat that we like better. I have a feeling that it is just going to come down to just picking one and staying with it.
Thanks again!
Lea ~ nice list, with some sites that I had not seen before! FYI, I am a fellow Caribbean LIP.
Believe me, it feels just around the corner!
Hi Lea,
thanks for including me! Seems us like-minded souls are getting more and more each day. No wonder though - who still wants to live a regular 9-9 job without private life these days?
Cheers from Bali,
Chris

Life is what you make it!
@CoachKip - I think your ‘feeling’ is right
If you’re going to be living on the thing for a year, is there any chance you can road-test them for a week/weekend or is that not possible?
@Mark - How are things up there in Puerto Rico? It’s wet and raining here today - makes a nice change!!
@Leigh - By the sounds of things, everything’s going smoothly foryou which is great. Far more planned and organised than we did! If only we’d done a reccie to Panama, we might have realised that Spanish was a MUST!!!!
Wow thanks for the mention - I don’t think I ever made anyone’s list before! Especially with my rambling blog! I like the sound of being a LIP rather than an unemployed bum, would-be internet entrepreneur! Easier to spell too!
Great to see such a big list! I wanna join them one day….
Hi John - let me know when you do and I’ll happily add you to the list
I second Zen, my blogroll will be huge after reading this(but that’s a good thing). And great list, it’s encouraging to see others achieving what I’m trying to achieve. I’ll be joining your ranks soon!
@Matt - welcome! Let me know when you’re a LIP and I’ll add you to the list
How do I get added to this list? I’m noticing quite a strong “nomad” theme among the names here… nice to know I’m not alone.
I’ve essentially been location independent since August 2005, and haven’t been in one place longer than 9 months since! Thanks for the ideas and continued inspiration. For those who are still working to become location independent, hang in there - it’s worth it!
My blog doesn’t talk much specifically about being location independent, but perhaps it will still be inspiring in some way, once you know that I’m working as an LIP on order to enjoy all these adventures!

@Amy - you’re on! Just added you and welcome to the blog!
Just discovered your site today. I guess my buddy and I should have looked around for a different name–didn’t realize the ‘nomad’ thing was a bit over done.
Great site you have here, Lea!

wow great list! i guess you could say i’m “location independent” at the moment, as a friend and i just quit our jobs and gave up our honolulu apartments and are traveling through southeast asia until june! =) not sure where i’ll end up after our current trek, but your list is truly inspiring - i’d love to earn a web-based income so i could do this forever! i actually got up the courage to do this based on tim ferriss’s website and of course, rolf pott’s vagabonding, which i’m happy to see are both on your list too. will check out the other sites too…

My newish blog, “The World Is My Office” belongs on your (excellent) list! It’s about the technology you need to abandon office or cubical forever, living and working from anywhere.
