Ideally running your business on the road as a web worker requires nothing more than your laptop and the common online/software tools beloved of modern digital nomads.

Sometimes however, you really notice the fact that you don’t have your own customised little workspace to work from which houses everything from your dusty collection of energising crystals (or was that just me?!?) to your trusty collection of reference books.

The first time round we carried a whole load of unnecessary office equipment with us having succumbed to “just in case” fever. But over the past year we’ve streamlined our portable office to the bare minimum of things we’ve always needed – and if we ever need anything else, we usually just buy it.

leaveitbetter_200.jpgA few months ago I had an idea which has been percolating in my mind until now.

It was triggered by our cleaner in Grenada asking us to donate some money to help rebuild their local church which needed a new roof (we did – thinking it was a small amount but apparently it was way more than she’d expected).

It got me thinking about the fact that many of the places we visit are often lacking in the first world facilities most of us are used to – and wondering whether there was anything we could do on our travels as a sort of “thank you” to each of the places we stayed in.

I had grand plans to set up some sort of charity fund, asking readers to donate to a pot of money which we would then distribute to a charity in each place we visited; but that seemed like an awful lot of work and a very inefficient way to do it.

But after reading Sean’s comment last week about the fantastic work he’s doing in Sri Lanka to help out after the 2004 tsunami, it galvanised me into action….(btw – Sean won the ebook) Read the rest of this entry

Fortunately, my experience of effective process design and our recent focus on creating efficient business practices means we were able keep on top of the workload and still enjoying exploring the fabulous city and surroundings of Cape Town.

If you live as we do – and run your online businesses whilst travelling the world – or you’d simply like to free up more of your time, then here are some of the simplest ways to put your business on autopilot…
