Sharing Some LIP Link Love

Today’s post is something a little different and something I’ve been wanting to do for a while….so when Greg let me know he wouldn’t be able to write a guest post for today (too busy off skiing in Zermatt or some such slacker thing like that), I thought this would be the ideal opportunity.

I’ve noticed recently on this blog that as it’s grown, it’s attracted really rather a wonderful set of readers and commenters…

At the beginning there were readers like Jacqueline Long, Donal, Todd, Emma Bird , Greg, Kavit Haria, Mike Peach and Chuck Huckaby.

Then there was a small bunch of readers who were in serious ‘planning’ or dreaming mode for their own LIP lives such as Coach Kip, Freebirdpro and Jim.

And more recently, there’s been a lovely gang of people including Cindy, Lissie, Santiago, Chris, Brip Blap, Sean Hodge, Michael, Mike, Naomi Durnford, Audrey, Never The Same River Twice, Neil Matthews and Shane.

As this blog doesn’t generate much of an income for us, I have at times wondered whether the sheer amount of time and effort it takes to write for it and run it is worth it - it’s only really a ‘hobby’ for me, not my business and yet it takes up way more of my time than it probably should.

The answer however is obvious…when I read the comments and conversations going on here and when I read some of the positive, inspiring feedback you guys write - there’s no question of stopping the blog…it’s what makes it worthwhile. And I never did start the blog to earn money from it anyway - that’d just be the gravy!

So…in a very long-winded manner, this post is to say a huge “THANK YOU” to all of you who read the blog, subscribe to it, comment on it, lurk around the edges and never comment (please do though, it doesn’t have to be witty or funny or useful - I’d just like to know you’re there!) or drop by once in a while to see how it’s all going.

I very much appreciate your time and attention and hope I can continue to keep it :-)

Ah, the bloggers lament. You have to do it for the love Lea as there aren’t that many LIPs you can make money out of. I fall in and out of love with blogging all the time, I think no ones reads it, so get all depressed and then when I stop writing, completely random people come up to me and complain that I have stopped.

I have found the best way to use blogging is as a learning tool. You are forced to research what you are writing about and all the information comes in useful at the most curious of times.

From a completely selfish point of view I would say keep up the good work as I can live the LIP lifestyle vicariously through you whilst trying to develop our business in Florida in such a way as to enable us the freedom to travel sooner rather than later.

Also, from your blog I have followed links to Coffee Break Spanish whose lessons now fill the memory card in my phone and 4HWW whose sub-contacting ideas I have already started to put into practice. (With limited success as of yet, but onwards and upwards.)

So thanks, don’t stop.

Hey what about me! Over here! Hey! Look at me!

J/K. This is a great idea for content in a very competitive market. I have myself spent a number of years living independently of place and will stick around both to learn and share. By the way, Lea, I am already starting to get to know your VA. Seems great. Will share more later.

Best,

Sean

Lurker here just saying hey! Found your site quite recently, I think through a link from Leo Babauta of Zen Habits. Although not an LIP (well not yet anyway!) I still find many of the ideas inspiring - so keep up the good work!

Lea –

I recently began lurking here and thought I take this opportunity to pop in and say hi. As a single mom of a junior in highschool, I’m currently pretty rooted in place, but reading this blog is helping me explore my dream to be an location independent professional.
Hang with this subject, as I feel more and more are seriously considering the possibilites for their ‘next career’.

awww that’s me up there! :) Thanks!!

My job doesn’t really allow me to live overseas and travel since face-to-face client meetings, physically installations, prep, inventory and warehouse are required as part of my job, but this blog still has a lot of great information for small business owners in general. I am also an avid oversea traveler (except last year because of growing my business), so it’s always great to read about other travelers’ blogs :)

Thanks for the mention and please do keep up your great work!

Cheers,
Cindy

What…you mean you don’t clear $10,000 a day from your blog like I do..? Maybe its time to tweak your Google Adwords. :)

Just kidding, keep up the great work Lea - its been a pleasure watching this thing grow!

Hi Lea..

Thanks for the mention :-) Your blog is the first and only blog that I have been a regular reader and commentor of.. so thank you for “keeping me hooked” so to speakl….

I hope you feel you receive enough reward to continue… I think the LIP “market” is a growing niche, that you have claimed top spot for at the beginning… I imagine more and more people moving towards a LIP lifestyle - so who knows - maybe this could bring you more income in the future…

Cheers :-)

Lea, thanks for the mention! It’s a wonderful site. I hear you on the revenue, but there’s a lot you can take away from blogging even without revenue (or at least that’s what I keep telling myself)! Like Mike Peach said, you have to do it for the love (of writing/blogging/enjoying the online community). The money will follow!

You have a terrific blog and I hope for our sake you decide to keep it up!

Hello all - and especially you lurkers who have commented (thank you - made my day!)…

Re. the income - it’s not a big gripe at all because I LOVE blogging (probably why I have 4 of my own and write on several others!!)….but I’ve recently realised that the time and effort that I put into this blog is way out of proportion with how I should be spending my time on my income-generating business activities.

It’s easy to do because I really, really enjoy the blog - but I just needed to give myself a good talking to as I have a great little business which I felt was starting to be neglected on account of spending so much time here. Tut tut…not following my own advice there :-(

It’s especially important to ensure I focus on the *right* things this year as we’re aiming to take the next step with our business and grow beyond the traditional confines of it just being the two of us…essentially we’re aiming to “grow up”!!

However, all that means to me when it comes to this blog is that I have to be smarter and work smarter - not harder - at it…so that’s starting from now and although hopefully you won’t notice things changing (for the worse, at least), it’ll put things back into balance for me.

So…don’t worry, you can’t get rid of me that easily!!! I’m here to stay :-)

To all you lurkers and potential LIP’s out there - I can’t recommend “X Marks the Spot” too highly - and I’ve lived in Bristol, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Crete, New York, Chicago, Barcelona, Madrid, Bath and now a small village in deep Spain so I know what I’m talking about :)

Lea is practially giving the book away, so give the girl some beer money from this great blog which benefits us all…

Lea, thanks for including me in the LIP community! Your post and your last comment struck a cord. We sometimes also look at the amount of effort we put into our website and also wonder about whether it’s the best use of our efforts as it’s not a huge money maker : ) Like you, the community, comments, and people who have contacted us do make us feel like it is worth our efforts.

Also, we’ve been looking at ways to work more strategically and smarter. It’s starting to pay off, slowly but surely. It’s all a learning process!

Finally, I look forward to reading X Marks the Spot when I can get a reliable internet connection again! You definitely don’t come to Myanmar for the internet connections : )

Thanks for mentioning me. You write quality posts so you could probably reduce the number you post without experienceing any problems. I for one, will still be hooked!

Thanks.
