In Transit
I had a post all lined up today which was going to announce that we’ll be taking a break from this blog for a while whilst we have a pretty busy few weeks with travel and business.
However, I changed my mind and decided that I don’t really want to take a break but we just wouldn’t be posting this week as we don’t have a draft that’s in a decent enough state to be read by you guys & gals!
As I type this, I’m sitting in the Emirates lounge in HK airport waiting for our flight to Dubai, where we’re staying overnight before flying to the UK for a week (with a quick trip down to Devon then back ‘home’ to Nottingham) before flying back to Dubai for 3 days and then finally to South Africa for 6 months.
It’s late (10.30pm) and our flight doesn’t leave for another 2 hours so we will be tired, grumpy and no doubt jet-lagged this week.
Therefore, please excuse the lack of posts this week for the next couple of weeks - but it is only temporary for now!

Wow, coincidence! After 3 months in Florida, we’re flying back to Gatwick in 2 days, then on to Devon for a few days before heading “home” to Worcester for a month. After that, if our tickets work out we’ll be flying to HK as a hub for 9 months in Asia (Bangkok and Manila for the most part)…
I’m curious about how you buy your flights. Do buy one way flights on to your next destination, return tickets from the UK, or round-the-world tickets?
We spent the last 6 months buying one-way (UK->India->Manila->Florida->UK) and it has cost a small fortune. I’m trying to figure out whether we can save much with a round-the-world ticket. That will have limit cities to stop at, and force us back to the UK after 12 months. But we can get short return flights to nearby countries we want to live in, until we move to another continent on the RTW…
I enjoy your posts so much, so *I* don’t mind if they’re not in a decent state to be read.
And oh how glamourous, to be in the airport lounge, at 10:30 at night with another 2 hours to go (hears snoring in the background)
Looking forward to hearing more when you go back to Nottingham: that’s where my sibling lives!
And for you both, have you considered outsourcing your web work at all to people who live in the countries you’re visiting? Like hiring an Indian or Filipino subcontractor to fulfill some of the projects? My partner and I have considered this but decided against it, but since you’re based in these places for a few months at a time, you have face-to-face interaction with the coders/designers and can evaluate their work.
Small world!! Im only a hour away from you when you guys get to Devon.
Have a good journey.

@Gaz - Welcome back to the UK! I’m sitting in Whole Foods on High St Kensington using their wireless - just landed from Dubai so feeling a little worse for wear. Re. flights - last year we tended to buy single, one-way flights which did work out expensive but gave us flexibility. This year, we’ve had more of an idea of where we want to be so have gone with the multi-leg option (but not RTW as we’re going back and forth) - we’ve found a route that works out pretty well to shuttle between the places we want to be and also works out to be cost effective - so much so that we’re flying business class. RTW can be restrictive so maybe try the multi-leg routes…
@Monica Flores - thanks!
Good question about outsourcing…it’s something we’re doing quite a bit more of and is the business model we’re using for the design/marketing part of PW. We use graphic designers in Panama (friends who we met whilst there), I sometimes use a filipina VA and we outsource a lot of the technical build work to a supplier in the US (but originally from India). Most of the design work we keep in-house, but we’re also using client managers these days. It’s working well so far - and IMO helps diversify some risk using suppliers all over the world. So far, we haven’t met any of them (except the designers) but it’s something I’d like to focus on next year and see if we can build a good team of people who we personally meet and train…as you say, it’s silly not to given we’re likely to visit many of these places and spend time there.
@Guy at Midlife - small world indeed! Would love to have had a ‘blog meet-up’ but we’re on a granny holiday with my Grandma and I think she’d be a little bewildered by it all
Do you need a guest columnist? I’d check in with Nate Ritter. He and his lovely wife Tilly moved to France this week and are writing about their adventures at http://travel.perfectspace.com/
