The Impracticalities Of Working From Anywhere

I bet that isn’t a title you expected to read on a blog where we mostly talk about how *possible* it is to work from anywhere, is it?

When it comes to the “live anywhere, work anywhere” lifestyle of a modern nomad, the usual images of tanned entrepreneurs tapping away at their laptops on the beach under a palm tree spring to mind.

The reality however is quite different.

Have you ever really tried working from a beach with your laptop? - where it’s so damn hot that the rivers of sweat pouring down your face make it impossible to see your screen, if that is, the sun weren’t causing such a glare that it’s practically invisible anyway.

The Myths & Traps Of A Location Independent Life

Wandering barefoot across golden beaches in Thailand and eating authentic, delicious Pad Thai (that costs just over 80p a dish) one month…Swanking it up surrounded by super-yachts in the Marina and eating Michelin-starred meals in Dubai the next…Diving with great whites and sampling world class wines in South Africa the month after that…

The Myths

It is easy to believe that location independent living is a lifestyle for the rich, famous or those with large trust funds only.

It’s easy to believe that a location independent life is only for those who are *extremely* fortunate and you’re not one of them.

It is easy to believe that you’ll never create the location independent lifestyle for yourself if you’re just starting out and you’ve got multiple hurdles to leap over.

It is easy to believe that once you start your location independent life, all your worries and troubles will be over and you’ll live the life I described above, trotting about the globe without a care in the world.

It is easy to believe that you’ll find the *perfect* place you can call home and that once you’ve found it, everything will feel alright.

The Traps

It is easy to become addicted to the excitement and adrenalin rush of visiting exotic new destinations every few months.

It is easy to look forward to the next destination so much that you sometimes forget to enjoy the here and now of where you are currently.

It is easy to compare one place favourably or otherwise to another and not take it on its own merits.

It is easy to let the time zones get the better of you.

It is easy to get distracted by your new surroundings, take too much time off and forget to focus on your business or means of income.

Some of you know me already, some of you might not.

The lifestyle I’ve described at the beginning of this post is mine…a 30 year old ‘normal’ person, who grew up in Nottingham (the gun capital of Europe, if you really want to know), who doesn’t have a huge trust fund but does consider herself *extremely* fortunate.

Jonathan, my husband, and I have disproved all of the above myths and fallen into all of the above traps. If we can do it, so you can you…enjoy the ride.

5 Things That Will Help You Settle In Quickly When You Lead A Nomadic Lifestyle As A Web Worker

With our arrival in Thailand last week, it is the 8th place we’ll have lived in during the past 14 months for a period of 4 weeks or more. You might say we’ve become accustomed to hitting the ground running, sussing out our new surroundings and getting used to a new way of doing things!

It’s figuring out the simple things that can prove a challenge - things like…

  • Figuring out how to fill up with petrol - self serve or not? To tip or not?
  • Working out how supermarkets work - weigh fruit & veg before checking out? Handing in handbag/other shopping bags to security before you enter the store?
  • Checking out the TV channels and working out which ones have the best movies on.
  • Figuring out the driving rules and whether tooting your horn is rude or friendly.

Moving round as a modern nomad can be unsettling and stressful - you begin to crave routine, you seek out the familiar and you find yourself constantly comparing one place to another. Achieving a sense of feeling settled might be the very thing you were trying to escape when you left home - and yet it may well be the thing you find yourself constantly striving for whilst you’re away.

(No, I’m not feeling homesick - nor unsettled - but it struck me recently that no matter how well this lifestyle suits us, it can be pretty stressful when it comes to moving on!)

There are a number of things however, which will help you get settled in and accustomed to your new surroundings more quickly…

Freedom to fly, blogging from under a palm tree, minimalist living, freedom to choose, total flexibility, never-ending variety, working from wherever you choose…lifestyle design at its finest!

Those were the things that drew me to design a life of permanent travel and location independent living. What about you?

Over the past year, we’ve experienced all the above and more.

Despite some of my more ‘realistic’ descriptions of the life of a modern nomad, this lifestyle has brought all kinds of unexpected benefits; some of which I doubt we’d have been fortunate to get otherwise.

As if some of you need any more encouragement or motivation to go for it ;-) these are some of the bonuses we’ve experienced as location independent professionals over the past 15 months…
