Experiencing thrilling new things together, sharing moonlight walks along the coast and candlelight dinners on the beach…travelling with your other half is one way to spice up a relationship or solidify an already strong one.
On the other hand the stress of moving around constantly, agreeing where to go next, living in less than ideal apartments and being in each others pockets the whole time could see you going your own separate ways.
As teenage sweethearts (we’ve been together for 13 years and married for 4) , we’ve been travelling together several times before. This time however is the longest….we’ve spent 12 months travelling, living and working together in each others pockets - and the “D” word has only been mentioned a couple of times (both times in Buenos Aires - one reason we left early!).
Anyone who’s ever had a relationship will know that it can be hard work…as location independent professionals and working nomads, you’ll be exposing your relationship to even more unique challenges…

There is one travel experience I will never forget…and it involves being robbed of $200 by a group of 10 year old girls on the streets of Nice, France.
It’s one of those things I’ll never forget for 3 reasons:
- At the time, I considered myself a fairly experienced tourist having flown to far flung places since the age of five.
- The sneaky & crafty way in which they did it still astounds me - but knowing their trick has saved me (and some friends) on more than once occasion from succumbing to the same fate.
- The fact that I was robbed by 10 year old children is still just a tad embarrassing.
Having survived cities such as New York, London, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Bangkok, Madrid, Rome, Paris, Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh and Sydney, and a fair few other places such as Belize City, Mexico, Guatemala, Budapest, and Prague (back when it was far less touristy), I’ve learned how to keep myself relatively *safe* but you can never be too careful.
There are just certain things you do and certain things you don’t do as a foreigner in a foreign land trying to keep you and your belongings secure…

Life’s a learning process isn’t it? And a good job too! There are plenty of mistakes we made in our first year as Location Independent Professionals and plenty of things we’ll do differently in 2008.

The Rules of LIP Living And Being Location Independent
I have had several emails recently asking about the concept of being location independent - whether it’s about constant travelling and moving around to new places; whether it’s about living in one place and working with clients in another; or whether it’s about having 2 or 3 different bases around the world that you travel [...]
I have had several emails recently asking about the concept of being location independent - whether it’s about constant travelling and moving around to new places; whether it’s about living in one place and working with clients in another; or whether it’s about having 2 or 3 different bases around the world that you travel between.
The answer?
LIP living and being location independent is exactly what you want it to be. It’s about freedom of choice and living outside of the conventional rules that most people follow.
These are the concepts which I believe are relevant to living your life as a Location Independent Professional… Read the rest of this entry
