Employees, Here’s How to Kick-Start Your Personal Brand Online

While originally written with students in mind, this article is almost exactly the advice I give to employees wanting to quit their cubicle, become location independent and work from anywhere.

Or, even if you simply want to get another job – one that offers remote working – taking charge of your personal brand is a MUST these days.

Where’s the first place you go to check someone out? Google? That’s exactly what prospective employers, clients, customers (heck, even me when you sign up to our mailing list!) go…better to control what people see there than not, don’t you agree?

In a nutshell, the steps suggested are:

  1. Know what’s online – this is all about assessing the landscape and knowing who or what is out there.
  2. Supercharge your personal brand – this is about deciding what you want to become known for (your special skill/expertise aka your brand message), and the taking control of the available platforms online.
  3. Leverage social media – this is about using social media to connect, support your brand and display your expertise.

Ultimately for anyone wanting to become location independent, it’s about building your credibility, authority, trust and visibility online.

{And to those of you who think social media is just something you ‘don’t need to do’ because your industry/business/idea doesn’t need it, I’d urge you to think again. You really, really do}.
